> Language
Official languages in Hong Kong are English and Cantonese. After 1997 handover, Putonghua (or Mandarin, national language of the PRC) becomes popular.



> Climate
Hong Kong's climate is sub-tropical, tending towards temperate for nearly half the year. Average monthly temperature is between 17¢J and 28¢J. It is not uncommon for temperatures to drop below 10¢J in urban areas. Severe weather phenomena that can affect Hong Kong include tropical cyclones, strong winter monsoon winds, and thunderstorms with associated squalls that are most frequent from April to September. Waterspouts and hailstorms occur infrequently, while snow and tornadoes are rare.

Hong Kong has a total of 20 public holidays. Many of the festivals are Chinese traditions that may not be familiar by westerners.

> Religion in Hong Kong
The major traditional Chinese religions are Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Hong Kong also has a Christian community estimated at half a million, including Roman Catholics and Protestants of many denominations; a Jewish community of about 3000 members; and some 50000 Muslims.

Most churches advertise their services every Saturday in the South China Morning Post and The Hong Kong Standard.

3) Tertiary Schools and Universities
There are eleven degree-awarding institutions, eight of which are funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC). Of the eight, seven are fully self-accrediting degree-awarding universities namely, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the University of Hong Kong. The other one is the Hong Kong Institute of Education which is a degree-awarding teacher training institute. In addition, there are three tertiary institutions not funded by the UGC namely, the publicly-funded Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the self-financing Open University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Shue Yan College. In addition, Caritas Francis Hsu College is a privately-funded approved post secondary college.

-Red minibuses
Public Light Buses (PLBs) are minibuses with not more than 16 seats. Their number is fixed at a maximum of 4,350 vehicles. Some PLBs are used on scheduled services (green minibuses) and others on non-scheduled services (red minibuses). Red minibuses are free to operate anywhere, except where special prohibitions apply, without control over routes or fares.

Electricity and electrical appliances
Hong Kong has 200-220 volt and 50 cycle electricity supply. Electrical appliances that are 100V, 60 cycle can be used in Hong Kong through a transformer.

Electricity is supplied to Hong Kong Island by Hong Kong Electric Ltd.
Electricity is supplied to the New Territories by China Light and Power Co. Ltd.

Gas
Natural gas is supplied by the Hong Kong & China Gas Co. Ltd. (Towngas);
Propane Gas is also available in the territory and is supplied by the major oil companies.

Water
Hong Kong water is safe, but as it travel trough pipes, therefore all tap water should be boiled before drinking. Contact the Water Supplies Department to change billing name on your water account to your name.
