SmartHK 2017, Fuzhou

The Institute has continued to partner with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council for 5 years in organising the HR Forum of SmartHK which was held this year on 25 May in Fuzhou. Three distinguished speakers, Ms Kin-mei Kwan, Executive Director of HKIHRM, Mr Ben Yeung, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of Fujikon Industrial Holdings Limited and Mr Wilson Zhang, Managing Director, South China & Senior Partner of Korn Ferry were invited to share their experience and valuable insights on succession planning. Around 70 local business leaders and HR practitioners attended and found the subject extremely interesting and useful.

Visit to ICAC Headquarters

To raise members’ awareness on corruption risks in the HR sector, the Institute had paid a visit to the ICAC Headquarters and a seminar on ‘Professional Ethics – The Best Defence Against Corruption’. Around 40 members joined the event to better understand of legal provisions, learn previous illustrative cases in the field and receive practical tips to handle ethical dilemmas in workplace.

Enhancing the Quality of Sustainability Report – Using Global Reporting Initiative’s Guideline (GRI G4)

In the light of the increasing public focus on the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) participation of the business sector, quality of the sustainability report plays a vital role in building the corporate image. On 20 April, Mr Jacky Yeung of SGS Hong Kong introduced the GRI G4, an internationally recognised sustainability reporting guideline, to our members for reporting their sustainability topics and performance, such as employment, human rights and labour practices.

Secretary for Development Shares with HKIHRM Members on Vision and Strategies of Hong Kong 2030+

On 11 April, over 30 senior HKIHRM members attended a meeting with Mr Eric Ma, Secretary for Development of the Government of the HKSAR, who shared on the topic of "Hong Kong 2030+: Towards a Planning Vision and Strategy Transcending 2030". The members took the opportunity to exchange views with Mr Ma on the importance of holistic long-term manpower planning, addressing issues including talent attraction and retention, developing a happy workforce, the future of work and Hong Kong’s integration into the neighbouring development zones.

With an aim to share resources among members, the meaningful event was held with over 50 visitors attended to take away 200 books in two days. On the first day, a kick-off was held, featuring 3 members to share their reading with 40 participants. All of them enjoyed reading, meeting with friends and food that night.

Seminar: Competition Ordinance - Legal Implications for HR

Noting the significant impact brought by the Competition Ordinance which took effect on 14 December 2015, the Institute organised a seminar on 24 August 2016 to familiarise 108 HR practitioners with the implications of this law, with Mr Cedric Poon Sze-chun, solicitor from Woo Kwan Lee & Lo, as the key speaker. During the seminar, Mr Poon shared insights and cases from the legal perspective to address what HR practitioners should do to comply with the law when implementing HR practices and what pitfalls to guard against such as rigging wages, and exchanging and sharing sensitive HR information that hinder competition in labour market.

The Institute had the honour to invite Hon Jasper Tsang Yok-sing, President of the Legislative Council, to meet over 60 members in a talk where Mr Tsang shared his views on leadership competencies and how to be a great leader. Mr Tsang believes that effective and great leaders should possess particular leadership competencies. Besides IQ and EQ, he considers CQ (Cultural Quotient) is another crucial factor which contributes to leadership success. He also shared his views on life, academics, politics and various topics which were of interest to the group. The talk was well received by the participants who had a proactive exchange of ideas with the inspiring leader.

Mentorship Programme Gathering 2014

Entering into its third year, the Mentorship Programme continues to provide a platform for pairing up participating Associate Members (Mentees) and Fellow Members (Mentors) in which members could enhance their career skill set and broaden business networks. A valuable mentoring relationship has been developed in 12 months.
The Institute organised a networking gathering for them on 10 Dec 2014, 20 of them joined it to make new friends and meet old acquaintances. All found that night impressive, enjoyable and inspiring.

Around 15 members took part in the tour visit to Guangzhou Metro and Tribunal organised by the Institute.  They took this opportunity to know more about the HR strategy of the Metro and had a chance to exchange view with their management. After the lunch, members went to Guangzhou Employment Relationship Tribunal to witness a court case about labour dispute.  Members had positive comments on the tour, regarding it fruitful and beneficial.

Seminar on Latest MPF Update: Learn More about Employee Choice Arrangement

The Employee Choice Arrangement will come into effect on 1 Nov 2012.  It will allow 2.3 million scheme members to transfer part of their Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) accrued benefits to a trustee and scheme of their choice once per calendar year.
In order to help our members better understand the new policy, Mr Eddy Chan of the MPF Schemes Authority was invited to speak to our members.  The seminars were well-received with a total of 450 members attending.

As one of the initiatives to mark HKIHRM's 35th anniversary, a Mentorship Programme was launched in June, which attracted 16 pairs of mentors (Fellow members) and mentees (Associate members).  It successfully created a platform for up-and-coming members to enhance their career skill set.  Through this 12-month programme, which will develop a valuable mentoring network, we hope to foster exchange between mentors and mentees.The Institute organised the first gathering to kick off the programme.  Over 20 participants attended the happy hour gathering which offered them a good opportunity to better understand the programme and get to know other participants.  All the mentors and mentees found the gathering enjoyable.

Visit to Ngong Ping 360

Around 60 members took part in two visits to Ngong Ping 360 organised by the Institute.  They enjoy the opportunity to have a closer look at its cable car garage, system and control room.They also met the representatives of the company to better understand their management and operations.

10/7/2012 Latest China Tax Update: Avoidance of double taxation for cross-border employees

The State Administration of Taxation of China has recently issued the Public Notice [2012] No.16 (PN16) relaxing the time-apportionment treatment for Hong Kong and Macao tax resident employees working across the border. With effect from 1 June 2012, the new rule helps reduce the incidence of double taxation of individual income tax in respect of cross-border employment cases as it happened in the past. In order to help our members better understand the new policy, Mr Jacky Chu and Mr Berin Chan of PwC International Assignment Services (HK) explained to our members about the topic.  The seminar was well-received by around 50 members.

Student Talk: Be Prepared for Job Interviews

In order to help our student members to be well prepared for their job interviews, we invited our Honorary Treasurer, Mr Dave Li to host a Student Talk entitled "Be Prepared for Job Interviews".  Not only final year students but also the 2nd year students were attracted by this topic and they were eager to learn the skills in order to stay ahead of others.Mr Dave Li shared serveral tips and skills with our members on how to prepare for and follow up on the job interviews, as well as the "Dos" and "Don'ts" at an interview from an employer's perspective.  Also, we invited Ms Joey Lau, one of the Associate Members who has been upgraded from student member to be our guest, to share with the youngsters her past interview experience when she graduated.  All participants enjoyed a fruitful session of sharing.

Casual Lunch: Sharing on 100% Natural Beauty Wisdom

The Institute organised a luncheon titled "Sharing on 100% Natural Beauty Wisdom" on 4 May 2012, hosted by a renowned beauty specialist, Ms Ling Lee.  She shared with the audience her knowledge of natural beauty and healthy tips.  Over 20 members attended and exchanged their views with the speaker.  The event was filled with joyfulness.
